Christopher Columbus — the New World’s First “Tourist”


Visiting Peru on the travel show “No Reservations”, Anthony Bourdain, called Hiram Bingham, the European who stumbled on Machu Picchu, its “first tourist”.

Explorers who opened new lands to the Old World were generally given the title, “Discoverer”.  Bourdain’s imagery plays to the irony giving anyone the honor of discovering an inhabited land.
