Christopher Columbus — the New World’s First “Tourist”

While visiting Peru, Anthony Bourdain, host of the TV travel show “No Reservations”, called the European who stumbled on Machu Picchu, its “first tourist”.

Explorers who opened new lands to the Old World were generally given the title, “Discoverer”.  Bourdain’s imagery plays to the long understood irony in giving anyone the honor of having discovered a previously inhabited land.
